This piece is simply called Goddess, and is from the Cypro-Archaic period mid 6th Century B.C. It can be viewed at the Louvre.

It’s a bit on the soggy side today but they say the rain will be moving off soon. It is however chilly again, and that is getting most depressing. It seems it’s never to be warm and stay that way.  We have tantalizing glimpses of summer then the cold returns. I am having digestive “issues” and so have decided to beg off the cleaning duties today, as I’m rather out of sorts. The Contrarian has risen to the occasion as he usually does and is doing the cooking today.  I’m putting up this blog which helps keep me occupied and away from my troubles. A bland diet for a few days should put things in order again. We are doing our standard holiday fare for Monday, ribs, potato salad and pea salad.

Nothing is happening in the garden so far, but the Contrarianis his usual impatient self in that regard. Each day he goes for a tour and reports that the corn is not up yet. Of course it was just planted Monday or Tuesday, and he grew up on a farm so he knows better. This does not dissuade him from his daily progress reports however. So far our plants have not been eaten. I found a dead baby rabbit in the bathroom a couple of days ago, thanks no doubt to Spencer the killer cat. That was the same day I was chasing him through the house with his latest dead bird, this time a goldfinch. He specializes in wrens usually.

On to the news of the day:

~~~&&&~~~&&&~~~
We in this country, with the blessings of our dear Supreme Court, continue to murder in the name of law, and we call it fair punishment for crimes committed. The death penalty is a cause near and dear to my heart, having been a criminal defense attorney for more than 20 years. I know at first hand the incredible injustice of the “justice” system. I know of the miscarriages that occur, and know first hand of at least two cases in which innocents were convicted. One was later released after serving four or five years. The other is presumably still there having now served more than 25 by my recall. Even when the system corrects an error and releases an innocent, is this justice? Read about how prisoners newly released try to cope with their new found freedom at Alternet‘s exemplary post by Liliana Segura.
Meanwhile, some states continue to pursue a course of public education designed to move American students farther down the competitive ladder in science. Louisiana in its infinite lack of wisdom has passed state legislation that allows the teaching of non-science in the guise of “supplemental materials.”  These bills are called “academic freedom” bills and are being offered mostly in the deep south bible belt where backwards thinking is still all too common. They are pushed by reactionary right religious organizations who are determined that Christianity will be taught one way or another. Apparently they do not feel that they can teach Christian principles themselves in their respective churches.
John McCain has no integrity, none. Yesterday he lambasted Obama  claiming he knows zero about veterans rights since he hasn’t served. You can read his entire rant at Blue Girl, Red State. It’s an embarrassing loss of cool once again, as McCain tries to justify his refusal to vote for Webb’s new GI Bill. Of course as she points out in a earlier post, some of the folks that are on his bill aren’t veterans either, but that of course is not mentioned. Worse yet, McCain skipped completely the latest war funding vote because he decided to spend the day with the Governor of California. And that would be Arnold who admittedly went AWOL from his duties in Austria to compete in a bodybuilding meet. Seems old old Mac has trouble remembering things these days. This subject is huge on the internet blogging world today. Think Progress has some more details that might be of interest.
I sadly don’t often have the opportunity to praise my Church. Today I can. Both the archdiocese and the Sisters of Mercy are on record in Iowa calling for immigration reformafter the ugly raid in Pottsville. Calling the policies of the Governmentboth disastrous and inhumane, the Sisters call for changes that insure that dignity and human rights are respected.
If you are interested in learning a bit about yawning, slip by C’est La Vie and Josie will give you the ins and outs. It’s an annoying thing to endure some times, especially when you are trying to watch something really good on TV and keep being distracted by uncontrolled yawning. And it’s contagious as well, as we all know.
I don’t know about you but I love beets. I can’t eat a lot because of their high sugar content, but this recipe looked so good. I don’t like the bleeding idea in this recipe, but if you grow the golden ones, it would be absolutely perfect. In any case, its a great little summer salad. Coconut & Lime brings us Beet Potato Salad.
History News Network offers us a fine piece on the question of the Confederacy’s treasury which has long been the topic of speculation. Did it exist, how much did it contain, and more importantly, where is it? There were supposed to be some 35 kegs of Mexican silver that have never been accounted for. Read this fascinating account and decide what you think.
A pear jelly recipe is offered at Homemade Jam and Jelly blog. I really enjoy making jelly and jam and I find it quite easy to do, and frankly, I have to because I can control what type of sugar is used. I’ll file it away with my others choice jam and jelly recipes. This year I’m planning on making crab apple jelly if our huge tree produces a good set of fruit. They say apples are setting very well this year in Iowa.
Have you heard? McCain has renounced his friends and spiritual advisors, Hagee and Parlsey. His minions are across the landscape claiming that it didn’t take Mac 20 years to do so either. But of course that begs the question. Mac actively  sought the endorsement of Hagee. And Hagee’s pronouncements in all their vulgar ugliness existed well before. So does McCain have no vetting process? Inside-Out the Beltway has another great piece on the subject. Given that McCain has shown us again and again that he has no ability to assess the integrity of those he takes on board  his campaign, why should anyone trust him with the government? Simple answer: NOBODY.
Inspired by antique quilts has a look at a new quilting book. I don’t buy these because I simply don’t have that kind of disposable income, and you can get most patterns free on the web. But I sure like to look at the lovely pictures which do give you ideas as well as that ubiquitous inspiration.
The reason why I love the National Reviewis that they are wingnuts of the first order. The degree of their attack shows the degree of their fear that all will be lost this November. Given this post, I would guess they have given up.  Rich Lowry offers us a complete article claiming that Obama is gay-marriage’s best friend based on one word, and that word is “respect.” Obama said that he “‘respected’ the decision of the California Supreme Court.” With that alone, Lowry concocts an entire post of conjecture, supposition, and innuendo. Too funny for words. I’m still waiting for somebody to explain to me what marriage has to be protected from. Any takers?
If you would like to see a broader discussion of gay marriage visit On Faith wherein this issue is debated and you of course can add your two cents. The usual suspects are panelists. The comments are great, ranging from the outrageously idiotic to the intelligent and well thought out.
Don’t know if you heard or not but Johnny Mac has invited some folks to his house for barbecue this weekend. Some of those invited are supposed to be on the short list for consideration of VEEP. One of those is the kid Jindal who is a whopping  37 years old and about as right wing as you can get. I mean he is a wingnut. American Prospect has a very thorough vetting on him today. Don’t miss it. I think he would be a grand choice, one we can all get behind to campaign against.
Tip Junkie has amassed a bunch of tutorials for you. There are ones to create a diaper cake for those baby showers, one to make soap, and about six or more others. Take a look and see if there is anything there that peaks your artistic interests.
The best mulch is a living mulch. That’s what I always say. Well, I guess i don’t always say it, but I have learned to plant in patterns that make the plants kind of help cover the area which does help the weeds to be kept at a minimum. Veggie Gardening Tips has plenty of advice as to how to do this technically speaking. Take a look and save your aching back.
John McCain is going to be the Republican nominee for president, so he is now auditioning candidates for vice president. And they’re visiting at his home in Arizona, which I believe is called the Lazy Artery. Wait, I believe it’s a ranch. I think it is the Double Hernia, or maybe it is called the Rancho Prostateo. This beautiful example of African art is a Mask made of wood, fiber, beads, and pigment. It is from Angola or the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is from the late 19th-early 20th century. The word Chokwe leads the discription. I am not sure if that is the tribe or what. I believe it to be absolutely gorgeous though.
Well, soggy it is. It has rained almost non stop since about 5 yesterday afternoon. It’s getting boring to say the least. We probably will wait to shop until at least Sunday, letting it dry out, if indeed it stops raining any time soon. Water is starting to pool around in the “yard” and our creek may start flooding us–just kidding.
I’m nearly done cleaning the craft room. Just a few more baskets of this and that’s to go through and redistribute to their proper location. I’m quite pleased with it, though there are drawers and a closet that will need a redo, but it’s good enough for me to find most things again.
It’s Friday, and that means, well, that its the end of the week. So, let’s get you the news you need to be the talk of the golf course, church coffee hour, or other social gathering of your choice.
Starting to get a little hungry for strawberries? I found this different kind of recipe at 101 Cookbooks, and thought I’d pass it along. I think you can vary this a good deal with different fruits, different sugars (vanilla infused sugar for instance) and using whipped cream instead of yogurt. You be the judge, or follow the recipe as given. It’s called Strawberry Panzanella.
How’s this for weird. Today is the anniversary of the big one that hit San Francisco. April 18, 1906 recorded the worst ever earthquake in the history of San Francisco. Last night of course, there was a rocker and shaker epicentered in Illinois. I sure didn’t feel it, did you? I felt one once in Detroit, back in the 70’s or so? I remember it clearly. You can read about more disasters, (and we do get giddy about that don’t we) at American History Blog.
I’ve had a goodly number of gays friends over the years, and I adore them and their partners. It disgusts me that a small segment of my Church is homophobic, couching it in the old malarky of “oh we love the sinner but hate the sin.” That might convince were it it not for the fact that they drag forth every little tidbit of trash they find that insists that it is now definitively proven that being gay is a choice not a genetic imperative. Of course if you truly do love the sinner, this should not make a whit of difference. Here’s just a tad more evidence that the whole thing is genetic in nature and we thank the fruit fly for helping us along in our quest.
American Presidents Blog has a off beat post today about President D.W. Eisenhower and his love affair with the Augusta National Golf Club. A number of regular tour golfs knew him from his visits there, and have interesting anecdotal remembrances of him.
Methodists are the third largest Christian denomination in America. They are quintessentially America, being a moderate voice in the religious world. Brittanica Blog has an excellent overview as the body gets ready for its next General Conference. They essential offer a microcosm of American beliefs on all the issues of social concern that are in the news so much these days. Some expect a conservative backlash.
Okay, I simply get weak in the knees when the word ice cream is mentioned. Oh I have my favorites to be sure, but I’d walk a mile to eat most any kind. Imagine my delight, my near orgasmic joy when I saw this recipe: Ben & Jerry’s NY Super Fudge Chunk. Oh I bow to the folks at Copycat Restaurant Recipes for this one. Enjoy.
If you missed that series on growing roses at Sally’s Gardening Tips, she has a one post refresher with all the main points for you today. I, as I said, have had lousy luck for the most part, mine seem to die out after a couple of years, but I’m willing to try it again, with all her helpful tips.
~~**~~**~~**~~
I did not watch the debates Wednesday night between Barack and Hillary. I’m told by some bloggers I trust as well as some mainstream media that Barack did poorly and seemed to literally become tongue-tied when he was unable to deal with tough questions. This does give some cause for concern as he seems more than likely to end up the Democratic nominee. Mad Kane is at it again with a pointed, and so spot on Limerick. Should we be concerned?
~~**~~**~~**~~
I’ve lately mostly chosen not to engage in a lot of discussion about the Obama/Clinton fight. I tend to think that in the end Barack will prevail because he just simply has the numbers. He made a mistake with his remarks about Pennsylvanians and their misplaced anger, pushing them into guns, religion, and suspicion of “other.” I mostly, ironically or not, thought he was right, but also thought it was fairly a dumb thing to say. Paul Krugman has a different take on the matter and thinks Barack was simply dead wrong in his analysis. I’m somewhat persuaded that Mr. Krugman is right. What do you think?
~~**~~**~~**~~
PTSD is a subject near and dear to my heart. It’s a life-long condition that is at best coped with by use of a lot of mechanisms, none of them perfect. Some suffer a good deal more than others, and on the upside there are some promising treatments, especially when the trauma is addressed close in time to the events. It is horrifying to find that the Rand Corporation pegs the numbers of veterans suffering from depression, PTSD and brain injury at nearly a million. How the VA will handle this horrific number is impossible to know.
~~**~~**~~**~~
Most of us are trying to do our best to keep pesticides our of our environment these days, for obvious reasons. That is particularly problematic when we live in rural areas, because farmers are not likely to be prevailed upon to stop using them, given their convenience. But they do have an impact. Weed killers, have a deleterious effect on the development of amphibians, causing birth defects in them. I guess the rest of us must simply do the best we can not to add to the usage. Moreover, we need to investigate these problems for ourselves, and if warranted, lobby our state legislatures for measures to control the use of these dangerous herbicides.
Here’s to you IOWA:
Iowa Pranksters Get 3,000 Forks In Lawn DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) ―
When known pranksters Rick and Marilyn Jones left town for a wedding, neighbors seeking payback eyed their property and decided to stick a fork in it — a few thousand forks, in fact.
Tom and Paula Tschudi planted 3,000 white plastic forks in the Jones’ yard and dangled more from the roof, fence and garage.”We just wanted to do something funny to them, because every time we leave, they pull some prank on us,” said Paula Tschudi, who promised to help pick up the forks.
Over the years, the Joneses have strung beer cans like holiday lights around the Tschudis’ home, put a for-sale sign in their yard and strung yellow crime-scene tape around chalk outlines of bodies on the sidewalk.
As the Tschudis, their two children and another neighborhood family planted the forks Sunday, one passer-by asked what they were doing.”We told him we were aerating their lawn,” Paula Tschudi said with a laugh.
Down in Washington it was so sunny the Pope was wearing his stained-glass sunglasses.
These international trips are tricky, and often there can be some confusion and perhaps some embarrassment. They had an episode today in Washington, everybody is laughing about it now. But at the time it was not funny. The Pope, after the mass, accidentally gave the last rites to John McCain.
The Pope, God bless him, got on the Pope-Mobile after the mass. And then, President Bush followed him in the Dope-Mobile. David Letterman
Welcome to “Leda and the Swan” sculpted by Jean Thierry. Work done in 1717.
First off I’d like to apologize for yesterday’s post. I try very hard to run down all the links and make sure they are what they say they are, but yesterday got a bit beyond me, and I later found a couple of bad links. They were both associated with the freebie section. I could not locate either the “socket” or the wipes/floss offers. I shall watch more carefully from now on. There is nothing worse than following links to nowhere. I dislike bloggers who link to something that in turn links to somewhere else. I try to drop the middleman and take you directly, in most cases, while giving due credit to the blog that alerted me. Time does not always allow me to do this as diligently as I would wish. The freebies sites seem the worst for this it seems. Perhaps some companies withdraw the offers and the links were good to start. In any case, I’m sorry if any of you were frustrated in finding bargains. I got the poster and a Quaker Oat’s granola bar offer as I recall.
Okay, enough said, let us see what is just dying to be found out today!
As I sit here, Martha Stewart is on, and has a great little idea. If you have nice doilies, perhaps saved in a drawer from Grandmother or Mother, and never seem to find a good use for them, beautiful as they are, well, here’s an idea. She uses this “fabric stiffener” I assume coming from a craft store (it’s white gluey looking and not fabric spray starch). You wet the doily so that it’s completely saturated but not drippy. You then drape it carefully over a bowl and smooth is carefully, or on the inside of a bowl, whichever works best. When it has dried, you release it carefully from the bowl and it is it’s own little perfect bowl. Be creative. Use them for candy dishes with a appropriate liner to keep them clean, colored eggs for Easter, a little Easter basket perhaps. They are lovely and delicate. I call them doily dishes. I assume if you go to her site, you can get real directions, but I think I’ve given you pretty much all there are. It’s quite simple.
American Revolution Blog weighs in on the topical subject of sex scandals in our political arena. We are now in the midst of yet another one, this one involving the Governor of New York. In the last few years it seems we have faced a steady stream of dutiful wives standing next to their fallen husbands who could not, err, keep it zipped as it were. Does this suggest that we are in the thralls of a promiscuous society laid low by our disaffection for the morals our mothers taught us? Brad Hart suggests that what is happening today is no different that what was happening in this country from its beginnings. There was a thriving prostitution business at most of the army camps during the Civil War I’m told, and probably a few camp followers during the Revolutionary war as well.
~~**~~**~~**~~
We watch a fair number of nature shows and generally enjoy them a lot. We do draw the line when they show too many who have died from poaching. The gruesome film of dead gorillas with their hands removed, or elephants with sawed out tusks simply make me tear up and decry my helplessness at such cruelty. I have been worrying about our deer herd this year what with the lousy winter and what with a larger than usual take during the hunting season. (Yes we eat a lot of venison–we get about two a year from grateful “hunters.”) I have seen very few this winter though we have seen dozens of pheasants and plenty of bunnies and coyotes. An Iowa Garden tells us all about “Sweetheart” the orphan fawn and how he did this winter. A heartwarming and pleasant story.
If you need business cards, there is an offer for 250 free ones, from Vistaprint. This comes from Begging for Bargains. The link to Clinique for a free blush is no good as far as I can determine unless perhaps you buy something else, this may be a free gift.
We in the meadow here have not a speck of concrete anywhere. We have been talking about building a small patio slab in the front to sit on those lazy early evening days, as the sun retreats to the night, but well. You see, the Contrarian needs substantial pondering time before any project can be actually begun. He’s been pondering this one for near on to 2 years, so perhaps I’ll get some action this year. If you have a patio or other paved area outside, no doubt you have weed problems. Those pesky “I’m gonna survive no matter what” dandelions or other such undesirables sneaking up through cracks in the paving, can be hard to eliminate. If you want a safe and eco-friendly way of getting rid of them, drop by Sally’s Gardening Tips and get some good ideas.
I think one of the things I miss most during our long bouts of no fresh veggies, is a salad. I love complex salads with lots of ingredients and simple ones with only a couple. This one struck me as a fine spring salad, certainly good enough to eat as a brunch on Sunday. Family Style Food brings your this recipe for Mediterranean Salad. The picture does look very good!
Okay we did the Eliot Spitzer thing already. But heck, lets enjoy the fun of scandal just a bit longer. It is so self-satisfying and so self-righteous don’t you think? Over and over again, I ask the same question, do these boobs really think they can get away with it forever? There are days when there is no real news, and real and not so real journalists go looking and poking and turning over rocks. They usually find the dark underbelly of life sooner or later. So that begs the question, why do these men do this? (I’m not being sexist–go ahead and point to a woman politician similarly caught, go ahead I dare ya.) There really seems to be a connection between power and prostitution. Read all about it at Live Science.
~~**~~**~~**~~
If you want a good story, slink on over the Jeannelle’s blog, Midlife by Farmlight and read all about the idiotic Pizza incident. It’s spooky and weird and leaves you shaking your head in wonder. You really can get into some strange fixes while you are simply minding your own business.
Visit Snag-it Online for lots of free clipart and avatars and other whatnots us bloggers just have to have to pretty up the place. I got the link from Niki’s Ventures. I’m going back later when this blog is posted and putter around and see what I can find.
One of the things wrong with this country is its tendency to make fun of scientific research. Unless of course it has a very clear and obvious practical usage that the common man and woman can see making their life easier. Then of course, we spare no expense. We are anti-intellectual when you come down to it, and the radical right uses the term intellectual to mean all manner of liberal tree hugging non-realistic personages. We need to be careful about such labels and pejorative and unfair ways in which they are used. Seems our GOP candidate has taken to complaining about excessive amounts of money being used to study grizzly bears in Montana, and called it criminal and a waste of money, likening the expense to that of the famous “bridge to nowhere” in Alaska. The study is actually quite worthwhile, the study helps those whose responsibility it is to administer the Endangered Species Act, to do so with intelligence. McCain’s handlers should study a bit more thoroughly before supplying the Mav with his daily speech. It’s always best to know what you are talking about before opening your mouth.
Susan Posner has another installment of “Fundamentalist” for your edification. I’m just getting into her new book and will be reviewing it here once I’m done. So far, the little bit I have read have been very good, and I’m really enjoying the read. Her knowledge on this subject is broad and deep. She provides us with timely information we need to make good decisions this election cycle. This does not simply apply to our national politics, but also and very importantly our local politics. School boards are randomly but continuously under assault by those whose true agenda is a church-state, their church that is. We must remain on guard and knowledgeable to this formidable danger.
Betcha didn’t know that dried peach pits give off a nice fruity aroma when thrown into a fire. And I bet you think it’s probably the most important thing you’ve learned today right?
Farmer’s Almanac had this additional heady information:
Okay, how do you store potatoes so that they last the longest possible time? I mean all that work hoeing and hilling and then the darn things seem to start sprouting by December. Who better than the Almanac to tell you!
Are there parts of the US where thundestorms occur only at night? Do you remember that they seem to have a lot of tornados in the southeast at night? Is that significant? Follow the link to find out.
