As we speak, the Senate is voting on two tax bills. Both are failing of course, since the GOP is holding tough with its demand that the rich get even richer. They take care of their own.

Sadly, this might have turned out differently had the White House not waved the white flag almost immediately after the midterm elections. Emboldened, the GOP knows that it cannot really fail since the President apparently doesn’t have the stomach to do as the American people ask: actually fulfill a campaign promise to end the tax cuts for the rich.

As we have said before, Obama can win this if he holds the line and lets the GOP argue that it is better to increase the deficit by 4 trillion in order to protect the buying power of the likes of Paris Hilton and as Think Progress suggested LeBron James. Where are the jobs after 10 years of tax cuts for the rich? I ask ya?

***

One of the things we expected from this Administration, was scientific integrity returned as the standard of doing business. Obama promised that scientists would be free to do their work and report their findings without being edited. A policy statement was authorized. To date, no such policy has been forthcoming, and a significant number of scientists in the FDA and AG, report being urged to exclude or alter information. Read about it at New Scientist.

***

For a different prospective on DADT: The Reaction asks: What do Bulgaria, Jordan, Poland, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and the US have in common? Go read the article and see. Oh oh, yes, we do have friends in low places.

***

Ethics Daily reports that a slew of right-wing Christians leaders met a couple of months ago at a Dallas airport to work out how to get rid of Obama and install a right-wing friendly president in the Oval office. Scary rundown of names.  (H/T to Ahab at Republic of Gilead.

Don’t know if you caught the big news from NASA. Life as we know it, has well, you know, C H A N G E D. It’s a subtle point, but once “gotten” its like huge. It’s like Star Trek! Okay, thoroughly confused? Let me ‘splain. (Remember I told you a couple of years ago, that most anything can be explained or understood via an episode from Star Trek?)

The Enterprise went to investigate a mining colony on a dead planet. Miners were turning up dead. What they discovered was that the planet was not dead, but a silicon-based life form was doing fine there, except that miners were killing the “eggs” of the mother Horta.

Once they made contact, they patched up the wounded Horta with some cement which worked just fine, and everybody got along famously.

The point is, that we have so far only identified life as being carbon based. And that requires a number of other elements to be viable. One of those elements is phosphorus. Trust me on this, I just read it in a book I’ll be reviewing for you next week.

Anyway, in a lake in California Mono, to be specific, a microbe has been found that doesn’t have any phosphorus in its DNA. Rather it has arsenic, yes you heard that right. It’s a bacterium that is different from any life form on this planet. No idea how it got here either.

What this means is that when we turn on the telescopes and scan for the stuff we think means life, we can’t just stop at the carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, sulphur, nitrogen and phosphorus, but must also scan for arsenic. What is life just got a whole lot broader. The possibilities are well, huge.

I feel all warm and cozy now, sure that surely we are not alone. A little alien may be among us, or perhaps even in our carbon based environment, other types of life can arise. Who knows? Science is wetting its pants and agog with excitement. But they get excited about a new species of newt too. :/  (Note the link is to the post of Dec. 2–I have loads of trouble with this reader feed)

***

See, there are theologians and biblical scholars. And then there are wannabes. I’m one of those. But in this category, theology,  there are Wannabes and wannabees. I’m the latter. John is the former. If you are feeling all theology-y, then drop over and read what John has to say about how Paul acquired his theology on the road to Damascus. (pssst. it probably didn’t happen there, since Luke is probably not giving a historically accurate account of Paul’s travels here, but it assuredly happened to Paul somewhere!)

***

If’n you want to see a psychoanalysis of Mr.’s McCain and Obama, then Crooks and Liars is your choice. Lots of interesting commentary from varied sources, make these two almost equally delusional.

***

We got about two solid inches of snow. We can get out. We tidied up the bird feeder and put the “open” sign up. The dogs are sleeping. The cats are sleeping. I’m being a good wife and cooking liver ‘n onions for my husband. Don’t mind eating it, just hate fixin’ it. Going to church tomorrow. Lookin’ for some college football to watch. Havin’ ham for Christmas. Reading a lot these days, publishers have been kind. That is a tour of my synapses, known as roamin’ round the noggin.

I Don’t Know Whether to Throw in the Towel, or Chew It

Frankly, I haven’t had a lot to say about health care reform for some time. I grew tired. I grew disgusted. I could feel my blood pressure soar at the mere contemplation.

Nothing has changed. The “Summit” turned out as expected. Mitchy McConnell worries that his side only has gotten 13 minutes and the other side 52 minutes so far, and Johnny McCain cannot avoid the temptation to mewl about the lost election but again. In between, the same tired old arguments, most all of them argued, debated, and proven wrong or right a kazillion times already.

So, I’m not wasting your time with arguments, you’ve heard them all before. What I can do is point you toward some useful information. One of these nuggets of truth is a piece from TruthOut written by Professor George Lakoff about how brains work. It’s a fascinating article and really helps one realize why conservatives are as they are and why liberals are as they are.

Basically, we are wasting time talking. The worldview of the average Republican suggests that anything Obama is destructive, thus even pointing out that Democrats are willing to push certain Republican points, Republicans will LOGICALLY flip and now oppose them. They view any action to support this president to be counter productive. They believe that they are doing the right thing in being the party of NO.

In part it depends on how one is raised. Conservative Republicans tend to be brought up in authoritative father dominated families. The world is dangerous, dad protects, children are obedient, and punished physically for failure to comply. Liberal Democrats are tend to be brought up in nurturing supportive families without gender control, where helping family and others is seen as being empathetic and responsible. Both tend to place make these “governing” models onto new institutions such as church, work, and government.

So, you cannot shame a conservative into doing the “right” thing because he doesn’t and will never see it as right. Flipping and flopping are seen as necessary to stop the ruination of America.

Lance Simmens writing at Huff Po, suggests that congress is the new death panel. They clearly and uncategorically deny that health care is a human right, thus they are the ones who are willing to decide who will receive it and who won’t. Let’s don’t go do fast, a step  at a time, and cost governs all. Such is their mindset.

His advice: Democrats must forge ahead, forget the Republicans and pass whatever they can. They will never get help from Republicans who pretty much have dug in their heels. And, their base, is of the same opinion, doesn’t listen to opposition arguments anyway, and want no truck with compromise at all. Witness what has happened to the new Senator from MA who is now being vilified by the ultra right for his voting yes on the jobs bill.

Iowa’s Tom Harkin has re-introduced legislation to end the power of the filibuster. He did so some years ago when his own party was a minority, so he has cred on this issue. Dick Durbin has gone one better, and is enlisting the public’s help in petitioning for the ending of this blocking technique. Follow the link and you will be directed to the website where you can sign a petition to that effect. For those of you in a hurry, go there directly by linking here.

Will Marshall, also writing in Huff Po, sums up the Summit by arguing that at least Republicans have been forced to put forth what they would do.  His conclusions are:

  • Republicans do not fundamentally believe that health care is a human right. Their plans would insure about 3 million more people, without explanation of what standards would apply and still leaving 43 millions without care.
  • They wish to reduce premiums by using methods mostly of benefit to healthy policy holders. Their solutions favor giving people options that reduce to bare bones their coverage at bigger savings by buying out of state and use of medical savings accounts.
  • They have no interest in working with Democrats because their base says just saying NO is fine.

Probably the dust up between John Sydney and the President was the best moment of yesterday’s events. If you want to read a really really scathing comment on Johnny, by all means read Paul Slansky’s piece, again at Huff Po.

Of course one of the most shocking elements of this debate is that so-called strong Christians are lined up behind Republicans on this issue. Somehow they find a Christ who is not “for” health care. Paul Rauchenbush speaks to this issue, and finally admits it is basic selfishness. I agree.

Well, enough I guess. One could go on for hours, reading and linking up to various opinions. My advice: Screw the Rethugs. Get something together, and push it through. Use reconciliation. Ignore the polls. Giving some relief will have a bigger effect than doing nothing. Ignore the Republicans. Ignore the Republicans. Ignore the Republicans. Is that getting through?

And just in case, you think I have nothing else on my mind, I’m getting increasingly disappointed in Canada these days. I think they have done a fairly lousy job all around on the Olympics. I guess I should explain, but I won’t for now. Trust me. You know you can’t don’t you?

Well, I’ve been saving a few articles I have run across during my convalescence. As we alluded to last week, the post election press is full of the usual Obama transition elements, but much more fun is the crazy world of Republican politics. The fur is beginning to fly as predicted between Sarah and the McCain campaign operatives. As well, we find the beginnings of the super fight brewing between the moderate wing of the GOP and the reactionary wingnut right. Months of fun are to follow!

Religious Dispatches reports that the much touted and predicted death of the Religious Right is highly exaggerated. In fact, what we will witness seems to be a fight among them for control of the movement. The more moderate faction will attempt to work with the Obama administration, the more wingnuttery will vie for control and try to direct the GOP in an even more conservative mode. Read their analysis.

I am always fascinated with any article that purports to dissect people from a psychological point of view. This article from The Daily Beast suggests that at least subconsciously, McCain deliberately made decisions that would guarantee his defeat. This was not conscious but was subconsciously his way of destroying the people who had destroyed his campaign in 2000. I don’t know if its correct, but I very much have always assumed that much that drove Dubya was tied to his need to prove himself to daddy. I think McCain has issues that stem from his successful father and grandfather and his relative failure as a Navy man. Additionally I think his POW time has a huge impact on him psychologically that was dangerous in it’s possibilities. Read this article and make up your own mind.

Another great post at Religious Dispatches about what role race, gender and religion played in this election. I found the analysis quite thorough and if this subject interests you, I’m sure you will find something worthwhile in the reading.

As we welcome a new president in, Britannica Blog has a fun little post on other presidents and some of the quirky things they said and did. Did you know for instance that John Adams swam nude regularly in the Potomac? See? Now go get that perfect water cooler tidbit that you so desire to dazzle your coworkers with. Also good for the kids to use in that next book report! LOL.

History News Network probes the issue of race and it’s impact on the election. Their review of polling information provides some important conclusions that we should all reflect upon. Most important the so-called “Bradley” effect seems to have been debunked as erroneous.

As someone who is more often critical of the Vatican than otherwise, I am pleased to report that Vatican officials are returning the head of a sculpture to Greece for inclusion in it’s proper place in the Parthenon. The head will be on loan for a year, and may be renewed. As some may be aware, the topic of antiquity pieces being returned to their lawful owners is hot news around the archaeology world. Reportedly, the Vatican possesses at least two other pieces of the Parthenon which may also be turned over to Greece. In any event, it’s a fascinating subject. Visit Rogueclassicism for the details.

Oh chocolate sets my heart a singing as you well know. Baking Delights has a lovely chocolate lava cake to offer you palate. I tried one recipe for these which failed rather badly, so I’m interested to try it again when my back allows a little more time in the kitchen. Enjoy.

Since the holidays are now close upon us, I thought I would include this rather interesting recipe for empanadas which are a popular finger food in Spain and Portugal. These are pork curried empanadas and they just sounded great. If you are having a party and want something really elegant but not too hard to make, you might want to take a look. Simply Recipes also suggests that you can vary the filling and spices of course.

Okay, some of us deal with snow during the winter. And those of us who have been raised in that hellish environment know snow, you know what I mean? Well the Angry African sends us a hysterical piece on a novice and snow. He happily waves at the snow plow who covered up all his clean sidewalk and troops out to start shoveling again. You can imagine how long his love affair with snow lasted! Enjoy this piece, but be prepared to laugh a lot, or cry, if it sounds all too familiar. I was nearly screaming with laughter, and pain as my back started spasming from my guffaws! Stop this!

Although we scored a huge victory in Barack Obama’s presidency, we faired badly in California with Prop 8, the ban on gay marriage. I am sickened as are many by this development, one we thought was not possible only a few short weeks ago. But all is still not lost. Read AlterNet‘s report on the what the lawyers say about the legality of the new ban.

Well, enough for today. Enjoy the reads, I’ve already found some for tomorrow that will wow your socks off! LOL.

It seems that most of my blogger friends use blogger as their platform. Yesterday, as you may have learned, blogger comments was not working. All I ever got was a message apologizing for the shutdown and hoping they would be back up sometime soon. I haven’t tried yet today, but I am sorry i could not leave any comments on your blogs.

Anybody see Greenspan testifying before Congress yesterday? He made a mistake so he says, his assumptions in some respects were wrong. His belief that a free market economy would aright itself without intervention was wrong. He mistakenly thought that a corporation’s head honchos would naturally work to maximize value to their stockholders. Hello????? That may have worked sir, when corporate CEO’s were paid normal wages. They had incentive to keep their jobs, and so they did work to maximize value for stockholders. But hello???? CEO’s are paid more than some countries have for a GNP these days. Being fired is hardly a terror to them. They cook the books and whatever else it takes to maximize what looks good on paper, secures their parachute and then walk away. Where have you been living Mr. Greenspan?

Truthout has a good article on what’s afoot in the McCain campaign. Precursor to the long piece due out on Sunday in the NYTimes Magazine, this piece talks as well of the breakdown within the campaign and the fingerpointing that has already started. Traditionally this doesn’t start until after the campaign has actually lost. McCain, still has not taken charge of his own campaign it seems, and there is plenty of backbiting to go around.

Crooks & Liars reports that our dear Sarah has, well put her foot in da mouth once again. Asked if she favored amnesty for immigrants, she responded, yes, she did favor a path to citizenship for immigrants. Why she does understands why they would want to come to America. This is NOT pleasing the base Sarah, they want all immigrants shipped home and a wall kazillion feet high to keep out the dirty rabble. You really have no actual philosophy of your own do ya?

Of goodness, if true, this is truly delicious. A few days ago, there was some minor embarrassment in the Obama campaign. Seems some internal polls got leaked “accidently” showing that Obama was only ahead by about 2 points in PA. As you know, McCain has decided that PA is the state he is going to try to pick off, convinced that Obama can’t be doing well there, given Hillary’s trouncing in the primaries. Well, hang onto your hat. Nobody can find such a poll. and insiders now believe that the leak was intentionally to lure McCain into wasting time and money on PA. His rallies have been poorly attended everywhere so we are told. Ezra Klein, always savvy, has the story.

One gets to a point where shock seems normal. This out of Iowa. The Iowa Independent reports that during the debate between Sen. Tom Harkin (D) and his young opponent, Christopher Reed, Reed called Harkin the “Tokyo rose” of al Qaeda. Following the debate when the cameras were off, Senator Harkin walked up to Reed and suggested that although Harkin had considered Reed a “nice young man” with a good future, Reed had ended his career right there. Are Republicans all drinking the same kool-aid?

I’m just pleased as punch to announce that the Connecticut Supreme Court has legalized same-sex marriage. This is so wonderful, and I think presages the failure of Prop 8 in California in a few weeks. I must confess that I am nearly as happy at the thought of the gnashing of teeth that is going on in the wingnuttery land of right wing evangelical discourse. Perhaps you folks might move to Alaska. From what I have seen, you might be right welcome there, or again, perhaps not. I’d not want to lay money on the re-election prospects of the disgraced Sarah Palin.

Well darn, another adage bites the dust. The apple does indeed fall far from the tree. Christopher Buckley, son of the famous conservative, may he rest in peace, William F. Buckley, is endorsing> > > > BARACK OBAMA!!! Slip by Break the Terror and read the details of his statement, which is worth the trip I tell ya.

Epicurious  has a lovely fall dessert. Pumpkin-Apple Streusel Cake.  It sounds heavenly. Just right for those days you spend outside in the clean fall air. A soup and salad and this for dessert would be just about perfect. Take a look and add it to your file.

Garrison Keillor  is a dude I can never get enough of. If you are the same, then link ’em up and move ’em out. He suggests that anyone still undecided today on this election can’t be persuaded by the use of English.  And I suspect he is right. Anybody realize that the mobs that now attend McCain’s mob scenes rallies, are huge turn off to the independents? I mean embarrassing to see walking talking human being calling Obama an Arab and a Muslim. Too bad they don’t have the courage to admit the obvious. I am a Racist would be the correct statement no?

Michael Tomasky  reports that General Petraeus at a recent Heritage Foundation luncheon, said some things that sound an awful lot like what Obama has been saying,  and an awful lot not like what McCain keeps trying to sell. This might play well in the last debate scheduled for next week. We shall see.

A very nice piece at the History News Network   on the Vice Presidency. It is my contention, and certainly that of many experts that an unacceptable VP candidate is more than enough reason to vote against the ticket. There have been way too many VP’s who have gained the main office through the death of the President. We cannot take a chance on a utter neophyte gaining the office. She would be at the total control of people we have not elected, and goodness knows who they might be. Sarah’s past practice has been to elevate unqualified high school classmates to positions of state power in Alaska. Anyone want the civics teacher as the Secretary of State?

Voter suppression is key to Republican success  and has been for several cycles now. Since they are the minority party in terms of voter identification, it makes sense for them to do everything possible to keep the numbers of voters low. Of course, morality isn’t part of their vocabulary. There have been numerous posts in the blogging world about the problem and the various nefarious ways in which Rethugs are trying to cheat their way into the White House. The American Prospect  has a fine article on the issue, but more importantly a number to call if you are threatened or hear of things that don’t seem quite right to you. Make sure you are armed to protect everyone’s right to vote this November. Voter protection hotline (866-Our-Vote). Lawyers should probably contact their local Democratic Party to volunteer.

I don’t know if you have seen the trailers for the new movie by Oliver Stone about our favorite boy idiot, George W. I don’t care if it’s good or bad, I can’t wait to see it and guffaw at the bumblings of the boy who shocked his mom when he announced, “they want me to run for President.” To her credit Barbara didn’t ask “of what?” Instead she said, “you’ve got to be kidding.” Saying that was no doubt a feat, given that she was fighting swallowing her dentures. Robert Scheer,  gives us his take on the Bush years and why McCain would only brings the same mindset to the White House.

The McCain campaign saw it’s wannabe first lady make a major gaffe, and one that strikes home for me at least. She, quick to assure America that her hubby didn’t suffer from PTSD caused by his time in Vietnam, claims that the reason is simple. He was trained not to get it.Whereas, the poor draftees were not trained and therefore got it. Veterans are upset, as you might expect. Cindy, fluffy head, please don’t tread in areas where you have no knowledge. Are you truly suggesting that draftees and others who don’t attend elite military academies aren’t trained? And psst, hubby was an abysmal 884 out of 889 in his graduating class. Ummm, what might that suggest little air head?

This is without linkage. I heard this last evening on something or other. I believe it was another of those Hannity puffy piece interviews at Foolish Noise. Our intrepid wannabe supreme commander claimed, (and I know I have heard him claim it in other places) that Ms. Palin is “a universally acknowledged expert in the area of gas and oil energy.” Now, my simple question would be this: Please give me the names and dates of all the international energy conferences at which she was asked to speak as said expert. Should be easy enough, no? Oh I forgot, she only got a passport last year. Okay, well then, those in the lower 48. My email is troyspeyton at att.net, just in case you have trouble locating me. I’ll let you know readers, should I receive a reply. No I won’t hold my breath either.

Okay, if that wasn’t your humor treat for the day, then perhaps this will do. Once upon a time there was a radio talk show host, who was of the rightwing wingnuttery persuation. He wrote a book, and gee, he had his agent lug it around the greater New York landscape attempting to sell the fine literature to a publishing house. He was a great writer, having written his little ditty in a month or so. Trouble is, nobody was buying it, and the agent? he gave up trying. The name of the Pulitzer in waiting?  “How Sarah Palin Won the Election. . .and Saved America.”  The trouble was, they kept taking it to the section on politics/current events instead of comic humor. Yeah, it would have sold in the humor section. Or perhaps fantasy?

Well, a bit of an abbreviated post today. It has been a hellish day, one that has you cursing. Since the Contrarian is still taking meds for strep throat and is going to an farm auction tomorrow, I talked him into staying home while I trucked off to Independence for shopping. This in the end turned out to be a good thing, though at one point, it seemed to be a very bad thing.

Anyhow, I got my groceries and was putting them in the back of the Bronco when a man walked up and announced, “Ma’am, do you know you have a flat tire?” Well, no, and of course I scurried around to look, like perhaps he was playing some cosmic joke on yours truly. No such luck of course, the dang thing was flatter than the proverbial pancake.

Said manworthless person, asked if I had a phone. “No,” I said. No phone was offered. “Well do you have someone to call?” “No,” I lied still holding out the hope that said person would do the chivalrous thing and offer to change the tire. No such luck. “Well, just wanted you to know so you wouldn’t drive off with it flat.” Gee that was helpful I wanted to yell, I’d surely have driven 25 miles on the flat without that alert.

I rummaged through my purse and found four quarters the outrageous price of a lousy phone call, and prayed the Contrarian was not on the internet. He was not, but then, the phone barely worked. I could not hear him, all I could do was yell out my predicament. I faintly heard, “I’ll be right there,” and a click.

About 35 minutes later, with my ice cream no doubt in a bad state, said husband arrived. Half way there, he pondered whether I had gone to Independence or had gone to Cedar Rapids, but luckily, picked the right direction.  After about ten minutes of cursing, jumping on the tire iron trying to release a lug nut, he announced, “Start moving the groceries into the truck.” Hmmmmm, this looked far worse now than anticipated.

“I’m sorry, I truly am.” “Not your fault babe,” he replied. “Just life.” A plan was hatched on the way home. We got the groceries inside, he called his closest friend and working buddy, and now both are on the way back up with more manly tools. Steve had four nearly new tires that we were thinking of buying, and so that deal was now struck. So I guess I’ll have brand new ones for Sunday and church.

Anyway, disruptions such as this always put me into a foul mood. I don’t like changes in my routine a lot, and we have had two major ones in a week. But, all in all, things could definitely be worse. The Contrarian dreams of the day when he has a flat and can call someone and dump the whole issue on them. I recall years of being single and facing this nasty problem more than once alone and at the mercy of some mechanic type who charged me a full months wages no doubt for the simple task. (NO I DON’T INTEND TO LEARN TO CHANGE MY OWN TIRES, SO DON’T ASK.)

As to the debate, I was hoping for a Palin melt down and a pretty much end of the election. Of course, I knew that would not happen, somehow that woman feels comfortable before millions and freezes up with a single human being interviewing her.  She is still dumber than the dirt I shake off my shoes, and it appears she changed no minds for the positive. Those that liked her, still do, those that don’t still don’t. Biden was fine, and substantively beat the pants off her. If you like giggles and winks, and inane grins and slopping pronunciation, she’s your girl.

So on with the news I picked up during the week.

Let’s start off with something good. Baking Delights  often gives us the best recipes, and today is a copycat one. Bennigan’s Baked Potato Soup. As the days and the nights continue that downward trend, this is just the thing to come in for after time outside cleaning up the yard. If you do that sort of thing, which I don’t, but hey, soup is still the best!

Another recipe that looked mighty good to me was this one from Coconut & Lime,  Baked Ziti with Rapini and Chicken Meatballs. I think you can substitute out the Rapini if you can’t find it, with spinach say, and the meatballs can definitely be other meat as you desire. I love to make casseroles that just have to be popped in the over an hour or so before dinner. I’m definitely a morning chef!

At the debates, at one point, Obama claimed that Kissinger agreed with some level of negotiations without pre-conditions. McCain said he was wrong, and later, Kissinger backed him up. Both were wrong and Obama was right, as Factcheck.org suggests in the actual transcript of Kissinger’s remarks. Read it at Democrat Dave’s Weblog.

Episcopal Cafe  reports that 33 pastors from the expected wingnuttery right have decided to actively urge their congregations to vote for McCain. In this, they are forcing a show down with the IRS which disallows political preaching in Church, especially endorsing candidates. It seems they think it a good idea given the current SCOTUS. Another reason Obama’s election is necessary, to stave off the reactionary appointment that a McCain win would almost necessarily bring.

Boy Garrison Keillor  is always good, but sometimes he is down right preacher, bible thumping good. Don’t miss his take this week at the Salon on the Wall Street mess and how McCain deserves so much blame. It’s a cutting and rip-roaring good read.

It is pretty much a political axiom that VP candidates in the end don’t matter. History News Network has a very detailed and interesting post on VP picks of times past and how those tickets did, and more importantly the impact of the second choice. It’s fascinating to see that, well maybe Sarah does matter. If she does, it assuredly won’t be good for McCain.

One thing is evident in the mess of the bailout. The Republican leadership leads nobody. That means Boehner has no authority, certainly Bush doesn’t and alas, poor John McCain has none either. But what is worse, behind the scenes Newt Gingrich was apparently playing both sides, publicly saying he was for the bailout, and behind the scenes working furiously to scuttle it. One can only surmise his purpose, but the Republicans are a mess as is their candidate.

There is evidence that some dinosaurs breathed like birds. This of course increases the likelihood that dinosaurs are related to birds, something that dinosaur investigators have been saying for some time. Turns out, much to my surprise, that birds don’t breath like mammals. Although they have lungs, they have these things called air sacs that somehow transfer air into the lungs without the usual in-out method that we use. This explains why birds can fly faster and higher than bats, I am told. Live Science  has all the particulars to read further.

Fareed Zakaria  is one of the smarter people on the block in Washington. His opinion is worth taking a look at. He has finally weighed in on the Palin effect. No doubt most people are sick of Palin and so I am tending to not put up that much new stuff, but Zakaria is a true journalist, one that is reasoned in the way of William F. Buckley and George Will. You won’t find better analysis than this.

If you haven’t had a chance to get to Out of Nowhere, you really should. Some very excellent writing. You may find this one particularly good. It’s on money and how we relate to it. How did Jesus? And if that one isn’t enough, another exceptional post is about the Gospel from last Sunday, the parable about the Kingdom, in Matthew 21:23-32. This one will be posted at Hear I Am Lord later this week.

McCain, meanwhile has been in Iowa. I don’t know why, since he has been far behind in the state for months now, and there is little if any possibility that he can win it. Nevertheless, he was here, and granted an interview with the Des Moines Register. By all accounts, it went badly with McCain getting pretty angry whenever his motives are questioned. Did ya know all his ads are 100% true? And don’t even suggest he’s wrong. He doesn’t like being told he’s wrong. There are some excerpts over at Political Animal,  and linkage to a full video of the interview.

Meanwhile, again, Glenn Greenwald takes on the neo-cons and their penchance for well, rewriting history. Everything that has gone wrong is somehow the fault of liberals again. This given their near stranglehold control of the presidency and for six years Congress. Oh, yeah, right. It’s quite a nice little piece and I urge you to take a look and laugh.

In general, if you don’t already, skip over to the NRO. Even Kathryn Parker is backstepping a bit from her “resign Sarah” stance. Seems she got so much hate mail from the belligerent and vicious right wing rednecks that she’s at least willing to hope that Sarah does well. The thing about NRO is that their pundits change their mind about Palin like every other week. As soon as they criticize her, then within days they are back to trying to blame it on the “liberal” media. These folks are wingnuts of the first order.
