[h/t Joe.My.God]

The situation in Syria continues to be beastly. Syrian dictator Bashar Al-Assad continues to reign death upon his people, determined to retain power at all costs. Following in the footsteps of Qaddafi and Bahrainian  King Hamid bin Isa Al Khalifa, Assad orders his military to fire upon peaceful protesters as well as those who try to recover bodies from the street or venture from their homes.

The situation is dire in Syria and Libya. Yemen is erupting once again in protest as the agreement whereby the Prime Minister would resign by the end of the month has apparently fallen through. Ali Abdullah Salah has gone back on his promise. Bahrain is heating up once again, no doubt encouraged by the bravery exhibited in Syria and Libya.

Much bloodshed is in store I expect, yet I believe that in the end, these uprisings feed each other, and ultimately they will prevail. No one can predict what these countries will look like in the end. No doubt some will fare better than others. Yet change will come and the Middle East will never be the same. I can imagine the fear that the Israelis feel since they no face potential unrest all around them. But that has always been the potentiality there it seems to me.

Sooner or later, I think all dictatorial regimes must conclude that over the long haul, such governments cannot prevail. One can only hope that Washington learns a lesson here, and regardless of the “strategic position” we cannot make nice with governments that repress their citizens all the while the elites live lives of splendor and comfort.

♦

Speaking of dictatorships, we have our own here in America. Big oil continue to hold the country hostage to higher and higher gas prices, resulting in increasing “pain at the pump” as well as rising prices for just about everything.

Meanwhile the Oil Conglomerates continue to reap enormous rewards from their speculation in oil futures and from oil subsidies which the GOP thuggery continues to vote for them in Congress. It’s absurd, its immoral, and yet there is no public outcry. While the GOP is feeling the wrath of the people when it comes to Ryan’s medicare killing legislation offer, no such hew and cry arises against them for their continued support of recession-deepening oil subsidies.

Absurdly, the American public blames the White House who has almost no control over the issue.

Obama calls for more regulation of speculators and the GOP responds predictably with “drill baby drill.” Experts of course point out that Obama has authorized more drilling and that won’t cure our current problems in the least for 4-5 years, besides the fact that THERE SIMPLY IS NOT ENOUGH OIL WITHIN AMERICAN CONTROL TO MAKE AN REAL DIFFERENCE IN THE LONG RUN.

This is just one of those posts that make you sing with happiness. Remember when President Obama informed us that the Justice Department would no longer defend certain provisions of DOMA? And he told Congress, it was up to them to do so. So they did. They hired a law firm by the name of King and Spaulding.

Well, the law firm took a longer look at what it was going to defend, and said, “thanks but no thanks” claiming they had not “thoroughly vetted the decision” meaning that they realized after some legal study that the provision in question (which called for the denial of federal recognition of same-sex state law marriages) was indefensible. Least that is what I read between the lines.

Such a law simply fails on equal protection grounds. This is the basis upon which the Iowa Supreme Court ruled that a refusing issuance of a marriage license to same-sex couples must fail. It’s not at all about “judicial overreach” or the common “legislating from the bench” but rather it is the simple exercise of placing the proposed ban against the constitution and finding it comes up short.

♦

This is so much fun, it ought to be illegal. They are eating their own again. If The Donald could be called one of their own that is. Rove is trying to get the conversation off the damn birther issue foreseeing that it only plays to the GOP, and will never enthrall the Independents. In fact it will drive Independents away.

Meanwhile Trumpy is telling Rove to go take a retirement! Trumpy thinks birtherism is just a hot issue that can be ridden to success in 2012.

Meanwhile, thoughtful? GOPers like McCain make fun of the The Donald by suggesting that “he’s having a ball getting all this attention” and basically dismiss him as a showman. In that they are assisted by the Democrats who virtually laugh at the idea of his being a real candidate.

It is all hard to understand and makes my head hurt. For, one thing is clear. If you poke a stick at an egomaniac, he tends to respond. Keep making fun of Trumpy and he will run. So it makes sense to poke him if you are a Democrat, but not so much if you are a grubby GOPer.

But then maybe Trumpy is a secret Democrat who is trying to destroy the GOPers from the inside?

It all gets so confusing. As I said, it makes my head hurt. So I’m going to recreate Easter dinner. Bye.

Last Person Found Who Can Still be Shocked

I do believe that 2011 will go down as the year when we, the human life contingent lost its ability to be shocked by anything happening in the world.

I mean, who would have thunk that the Middle East would have erupted into all this?

Who would have believed that the insipid Sarah Palin would still be uttering inanities?

Who would believe that Alan Keyes would write in WND that the end of DOMA is akin to reintroducing slavery into America? Don’t worry. You have to be as insane as Keyes is in order to even follow his argument.

Who would believe that some Georgia legislator (read escapee from a state hospital) would propose a bill that required any woman who suffered a miscarriage, prove by a preponderance of the evidence that she had not voluntarily aborted, or face prosecution?

You’re not shocked are you? No, we’ve realized that the extremists among us are capable of virtually anything, no matter how utterly Machiavellian or down right down home stupid it might be.

As we expected, the forces of right-wing intolerance are jumping up and down, waving their arms, drooling with spittle, slathering away in unison. They DEMAND that the GOP take up the flag of homophobic hatred known as DOMA and defend her ugly precepts. Strangely, the rank and file “GOP establishment” has remained fairly silent. They know what a sticky wicket they’ve been thrust in.

Ahab has more links to reactions as well.

Meanwhile rational human beings in Hawaii and Maryland move closer to respecting the rights of our LGBTQ friends.

Fun to watch doncha think?

***

That abortion billboard we reported on earlier this week in Soho? It’s been taken down. Thanks to Al Sharpton. The mother of the girl pictured was incensed as well that her child’s stock photo was used in this way.

***

One of the fascinating things that the uber right-wing does, is to put off on the left what it does itself. Namely, highly dangerous and inflammatory rhetoric. Perhaps the peaches in Georgia are rotten, but another infected individual there inquired of his Georgia lawmaker in an open forum:

“When will someone shoot Obama?”

The lawmaker, Paul Broun, didn’t do what we would expect. He was not horrified. He did not sputter and dress down such a sick suggestion. No. Rather, he commiserated with the “frustration” of the speaker. Need I say, that Broun is a Republican?  To be fair, this is not new to Broun, who called the President’s state of the union speech, filled with venom?, compared him to Hitler, said that  people would die from clean energy spending, and that the elderly would die from death panels. In other words, Broun is simply an ignorant hate monger.

Andrew Sullivan calls for his resignation. Witnesses claim that Broun laughed at the call for assassination of the President. By all accounts Broun is a bigoted sicko who has no place as a representative of any state.

***

People are gathering in all 50 states to show their support for Wisconsin’s fight against union busters. If you want to find out where your rally is being held, follow the link.

***

Don’t know as you heard how the Wisconsin Assembly managed to get the vote through on busting the union. During the midst of the filibuster, with no explanation, the Rethuglian speaker pro tempore simply cut off debate, called for the vote, the GOPer’s (all in on the ruse) hurriedly voted, and a few seconds later, the window to vote was closed. They declared victory and marched from the chamber. This literally occurred in a few seconds. Cheaters never win in the end. Sad and pathetic. Of course, in years past, the duplicitous governor has decried these late night sessions and called for their end. But of course when you are duplicitous, anything goes. Senate Democrats remain out of the state, continuing to block further movement of the bill.

***

Remember that bill in South Dakota, that would make killing an abortion doctor justifiable homicide? It was tabled due to “public outcry”. Well apparently the deaf Rethuglians in Iowa didn’t hear. They have introduced their own law, co-signed by 29 other GOPer sickos. As we have said, this is all just a waste of time, since the Senate is in control of Democrats. And Kraig Paulsen continues to waste taxpayer money on bills that are doomed to failure.

***

And the killing goes on in Libya. How do you deal with a madman? Qaddafi is insane, of that almost everyone agrees. Still I can’t come to wish him dead. Only out of power. I am enraged at his use of mercenaries willing to kill for pay. I know of no solution to end this. I pray for the people of Libya and hope that their misery soon ends. Sigh……

I have to admit it. I’m often truly taken aback at the clear brilliance that comes from the Obama Administration. And folks, he’s done it again.

You may have heard. The Administration, through Eric Holder, Attorney General, has determined that parts of DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) are unconstitutional and thus will no longer be defended in court.

First lets look at the actual statute, so we know what we speak of. You can look at the actual language at Wikipedia. Basically section two says that no state need recognize the same-sex marriage of another state. Section three expressly defines marriage as that between a man and a woman.

It is this third section that Obama determined unconstitutional and ordered Holder to cease defending in court. It’s important to use the word “defending” since the Administration remains obligated to enforce the law in totality unless and until such time as it is officially declared unconstitutional by a higher court.

Section two remains enforceable as well, and actually stands on firmer ground under the right of Congress to determine under what circumstances a state need give “full faith and credit” to the actions of another state.

What Obama objected to is the idea that the federal government will recognize some marriages in a state, but not those that are composed of same-sex parties. He determined that this violated the equal protection clause of the US Constitution. (The EPC is the main basis for the striking down of man/woman only marriage statute in Iowa for instance.)

What is even more important here, is that in a deft move, Obama has placed the entire mess in the lap of John Boehner and the GOP. Obama has notified the courts that the Congress, through its attorneys may want to step into the breach and offer defense to the provision.

One can almost see the twinkle in the eye of the President at this. Boehner, caught unawares of his new predicament sputtered:

“While Americans want Washington to focus on creating jobs and cutting spending, the President will have to explain why he thinks now is the appropriate time to stir up a controversial issue that sharply divides the nation.”

Does he cater to the extremists on the right who are suitably apoplectic? Or recognize that the country is moving inexorably toward favoring marriage equality and the courts are definitely moving in that direction as well? Oh the tough decisions!

Did I say that the extremist wonkettes were suitably apoplectic?

Foxy pundit Monica Crowley, legal expert, screeched that Obama was the US equivalent of  Hosni Mubarak, that democracy was over, and that an impeachable offense was at hand.

Beck’s Nincompoops were not far behind:

Snowleopard {gallery of cat folks}

For 15 years the law has been in existence, and could be challenged in the courts if he feels so deeply in the unfairness of it; that is one reason the courts exist, to legally redress wrongs done or imposed by laws and statutes harmful to the ideals of the constitution.

Snowleopard: You’ve obviously been in a snow cave for a very long time. The law has been challenged again and again, and recently it was struck down again just recently. It’s best not to open you mouth to declare that you are stooopid. Just a hint.

Divide…divide…..divide….divide…..divide……PUSH! He is about ready to create enough unrest to kickstart the massive tea party protests again. But this time the labor unions / communists / socialists / anti capitalists are planning to mix it up with us in a violent way. And when that happens Barry unfortunately will have no choice but to shut down these violent tea party protests and their violence-inspiring rhetoric. The backdrop of protests around the world toppling governments will be enough to keep the sheeple from raising too much of a ruckus about the suspension of civil liberties.

POTUS needs to be IMPEACHED!!!! Once again he has broken his oath of office. Who the hell is he to decide what is constitutional or not? which laws to enforce or not? He is still implamenting (sic) obammacare even tho it was ruled UNCONSTITUTIONAL!!!!! He is breaking the law in doing so!!!! This man is evil and will be the dam-nation of us all.

BreeZee: Girl calm down. A fifteen yard penalty for over use of exclamation points. Um, dear, don’t mean to disturb your wigging out, but more courts have found it constitutional than the other way around. I bet you think impeachment means secreting him in a Georgia fuzzy. Betcha!

Not really news. Obama wasn’t defending DOMA in any valid way.
The only news out of this is that he’s exposing himself. yet again.
Obama , on every issue, is taking the opposite positition  (sic) of the majority of American people.
Most Americans are not for gay marriage, most are not for hugging Muslims , most are not for Obamacare , most are not for public employee unions.
Obama is the anti American President

HippoNips: Why I do believe you scored a perfect zero. The tide has turned toward gay marriage, I think a majority of Americans are not Muslim haters like yourself, a majority supports the Affordable Health Care act, and according to a poll of about three days ago, 61% of Americans support the right of unions to collectively bargain. Have you been partying again with Qaddafi?

I have a gut feeling that the lolly-bama may be the last person that holds the title of President of the United States. I don’t think he has any plans of leaving his post, no matter what.

ablisterin: exactly how often is your gut correct? Does it talk out loud so we all can be enlightened? Or do you interpret? I think you should talk to Ozchambers. I think he gets advice from a part of his anatomy too, his butt.

Nothing should surprise us with this administration and in the world either for that matter. I tried to warn people when he was campaigning that I feared for America because he was the most liberal senator ever in US history. Nobody would listen to me.

waggie: Well, it was the dog costume you insisted on wearing while you gave your warning. It well, it just didn’t seem sincere. Ya know?

Keeps getting better. Its time to take up arms and defend the Constitution. Talk is cheap, action deserves attention. For those of you who voted for him are pro-switch hitters now

Jediusetheforce: Whoa there Luke. I can already hear the FBI tracing you through your IP address. And for your information I don’t like baseball much. No switching here.

Why is it only We the People that can see what is happening and not one polititian  (sic) or state?

Impeachment is the only way to stop him, because in 2012, there will be no election taking place.

APatriotFirst: Where did they hide that November, Tuesday thingie? And I bought a new dress just for the occasion.

And with Somali pirates killing 4 Americans, Hundreds of civilians dying in Libya, and the Union uproar and fleeing Senators in Wisconsin….this is what we get from the White House?

LibertyorDie2011: Shocking isn’t it? Presidents are actually required to do more than one thing at a time. Unlike yourself, who sits in your BVD’s, swigging a beer, munching a bologna sandwich and typing one finger. Congrats on spelling Somali right! Love that spellcheck don’t you?

AH, I love the smell of napalm in the morning. Everyone suitably awake now? Off to your day now. And the beat goes on.
