Saint Lucia

st-flagOur featured guest country today is Saint Lucia! One might automatically assume that this country might be in the Mediterranean given the name Lucia, but you would of course be wrong. It is located in the Caribbean. Specifically it is located between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, and north of Trinidad and Tobago.

It is a small nation, totaling only 606 square miles in area and having a population of only about 160,000 inhabitants. The maps below show the island in detail as well as its location within the Caribbean neighborhood.

st-map

mapcaribbeanLook to the far right, about 3/4 down the margin, next to last written country identifier.

It is as you might expect a tropical paradise, noted for its twin peaks Gros and Petit Piton. It is volcanic in origin.

It was claimed by both England and France, and changed hands 14 times before becoming the possession of England in 1814. It was granted self-government in 1967 and independence in 1979.

It consists of forests, beaches, pumice and mineral waters and has potential geothermal usage. It falls prey to both hurricanes and volcanic activity. Approximately 6.45% of its land is arable.

It is a young population, with the median age being 29, and has a life expectancy median of 76 years. Residents are known as Saint Luceans, and are predominantly black (82%) and mixed (11%). Sixty-seven percent of the population is Roman Catholic with nearly 25% being other Christian denominations. The official language is English and fully 90% of the Island is literate.

The country is ruled under a parliamentary democracy. It’s capital is at Castries. It’s independence day is February 22. The legal system is based on English common law. Prime Minister Stephenson King runs the country as head of state, although the Chief of State is still Queen Elizabeth II.

The country has managed to entice foreign investment, largely in offshore banking and tourism. Tourism remains the most viable source of revenue, but the manufacturing arena is the most robust of the Caribbean area. It is now attempting to revitalize its banana business. It remains dependent on foreign oil, the vicissitudes of tourism and natural disaster. Per capita income is at $10,700/year. Eighty percent of GDP comes from services and over half of the labor force is so engaged. The unemployment rate is high at 20%.

Domestic products that are exported consist of: bananas, coconuts, vegetables, citrus, root crops and cocoa, clothing, assembled electronic components, beverages, cardboard boxes.

env051_thumb activities278_thumb The perfect island get away. There seems a lot to do, a lot to see, and the weather of course is fabulous.

If any residents should happen again to drop by, you are more than welcome to add additional information for our enlightenment.

Brachychampsa Montana (early alligator)

Brachychampsa Montana (early alligator)

Well, hope everyone is fat as a tick and lazing the day away. None of that silly racing to stores in the middle of the night for me! I don’t do crowds and we don’t buy much of anything, so we are saved from the frantic rush to purchase what we don’t need at those bargain basement prices. How cheap is free? That’s about my speed!

Rogueclassicism has a really interesting article reprint on Obama and his oratorical skills. Matched against those of history, many liken him to another Cicero. The article does a fine job of explaining the imagery and symbolism present in the President elects speeches. It makes for some thoughtful reading, and after all, today should be a thoughtful day don’t you think?

I may not be very newsy today, but I sure found another thoughtful article! It seems a thoughtful day as I said. This one from Emptywheel. It explores Obama and his rise to fame, following the feet of many other black men. Race in a positive way it suggests. A worthwhile look at how Obama came to be where he is today.

There is a fair amount of rhetoric these days about the present state of America. Are we center? Are we center right? Are we now center left? Ezra Klein has a nice piece that goes through the definitions and gives us some idea. The Contrarian on the other hand, says the argument is meaningless, since however the country votes is automatically the Center, period. He may well be right, but still, Klein’s analysis is worth your time.

Digby at Hullaballo has of all things a recipe that caught my eye. Decidedly a Turkey day offering, it can sure be used for Christmas or during the winter. It’s a Buttermilk Pumpkin Cake, and I’m definitely trying it. Take a look and copy it out for yourself!

You really have to laugh at the likes of Michelle Malkin of NRO. Still unspeakably spittin’ mad about losing the election, she pouts that her kind don’t beg for help when times get tough. They are like her imaginary friend “Jan,” who hunkered down and opt out of the economy by going “beyond the sidewalks.” For those of you unfamiliar with the term, that’s the folks who, go rogue, live the rural life and basically try to do it off the grid. Now does the ever stupid Malkin ever stop to think what that might do to her blessed free market economy, if nobody was a travelin’ to the market? A not so subtle slam at the poor done in the usual poor taste of Ms. Malkin. Don’t enjoy this, but realize that this is the mean spirited world of the right!

A bit of a giggle over at Politico. Seems there is a new bio on Rupert Murdoch coming out and it has lots of unfavorables about the blowhard Billy O’Reilly. It seems most at Foxy NoNews can’t stand him, but of course money talks louder. Further, Murdoch allegedly picked up the Wall Street Journal in an attempt to balance his place in history. Not wanting to be known only for that rag Fox Noise. It’s amusing! Oh and the comments are especially delicious!

And you thought Turkeygate must be over by now! You would be wrong, and if you want the latest on the international crisis you best drop by Ragebot and read. It will tickle and delight you, I promise!

It’s a slow day, people are still recuperating from the food fest of yesterday it appears. Enjoy.

This Meal Better be Good!

grizzly-bear1

Well, I hope I am as hungry tomorrow as this bear because, I’ve worked my fool tail off preparing it. It’s not all done of course, but the majority of it is ready for its final stage of cooking or warming up. The kitchen smells wonderful and their is a cooling pie to ogle at. Unfortunately we are eating the last dregs of leftovers today, not at all satisfying when I’ve been around all these goodies all morning.

I’m pooped! My back is sadly sore as heck as well. But at least it is getting better by the week! Huge cudos to the Contrarian for his extra efforts around the house. He did floors and did the bed, as well as brought in wood today, took out the trash, all along with his normal duties. He’s the best and I am so thankful he helped out.

The dogs have been good, staying outside and out of the way. That probably has something to do with the fact that the weather is lovely. It’s near 45 degrees out today–see how far we have fallen? Forty-five now sounds good to us. The sun is shining and I am taking a rest before dinner. I will try to visit a few blogs, but right now I’m just too tired.

This will be all worth it. the meal will be great tomorrow and we will enjoy it I’m sure. The canine squad will enjoy the neck bones and no doubt they will get a bit of gravy and a bit of meat. The feline team will ignore the entire thing, not being the least interested in most human food items except milk.

We will enjoy this meal three and perhaps four times before packing up the leftovers such as they are and putting them in the freezer for later winter meals. Last year we ate so much of the dressing that there was but one more serving left. This is part of the reason I so love making the meal, it eliminates my cooking duties for three days! Just have to warm stuff up and no pondering what to cook! Not bad I’d say.

Sooooo, you all have a magnificent holiday meal, have the joy of family and friends, and spread love where ever you go. Blessings!

I am so grateful for my husband, our pets, our home, our health, my Church, and all my blogging friends. I appreciate deeply God’s offering of grace and blessings on me and those I love. I am grateful for our new president and those he is choosing to help our country out of this mess, both domestic and foreign. I bless all those who are away from loved ones over the holidays and I ache for those who suffer from want during this season. May God bless each and every one and bring us all to brother and sisterhood in common cause to cure the ills of the world and live in peace.

Loose endings for the Week

25 Tuesday Nov 2008

Just an update on what’s happening. Food is consuming me! Actually, I’m fully ensconced in the preparation of same. I did the squash and cranberry sauce today, as well as making the cornbread and getting the bread out to go stale. Tomorrow it’s full scale assault with dressing, corn casserole, gravy and brining to get ready, to say nothing of the pie. I’ve decided to omit the cake and make that next week when the pie runs out.

Which is all to say, that my time online will be limited. Just too much to do. The Contrarian has graciously offered to help with housework while I just concentrate on cooking. There is method to his madness as he likes to eat! I will try to post a thing or two as it comes to mind, but I don’t expect to be reading a lot of blogs and news reports this week.

Perhaps on Friday, things will get back to normal. I don’t do the mall thing, since we don’t buy hardly anything. I’ll scrounge a few decorations and brighten things up a bit, but I should be back at the drawing board by then.

I’ll try to get around and visit blogs as much as I can today and tomorrow. I’m taking Thanksgiving off completely to enjoy the food and football. So let me wish everyone the best of days in case I don’t get a chance to later. I hope you all have a lovely day of feasting and remember all the blessings we each have that enables us to celebrate this day.

I’m peaceful and not about to get frazzled this year!

Of Pet Rocks, Mood Rings and Sarah Palin

palinWe were at the Veterans Administration yesterday. Just a couple of tests of which we were not particularly concerned, and this post is not about that. But I do wish to say, we were immediately assaulted by the gigantic photograph of George W. Bush on entry. His picture, along with the current secretary of the VA are at each and every entrance to the hospital. I shuddered as I walked by and recalled that in less than 60 days that piece of trash will be removed and replaced by a photograph of Barack Obama.

Later, while I was knitting away in the waiting room, I heard a voice near by. It was an older woman urging her husband to move with her to a seat closer to the TV. Barack Obama is coming on to speak she said. I smiled softly to myself. Yes, the times they are a changin’. As I looked up from time to time as he introduced his new economics team, I saw that most eyes were trained on him, listening intently. We have learned over time, to block out the voice of Dubya, unless we are looking for a laugh or two. The times, they are a changin’.

Sarah Palin is a shadow across the land, slowly retreating to the icy darkness of Alaska. Oh she pops up now and again, giving an interview in full view of the turkey killing going on behind her. Apparently she not only can’t see such things, she cannot hear them either. She must be encased in some cone of pure insular vacuum.

I began to think about our girl Sarah. There was a mighty flood of information about the diva mere moments after her defeat. More than we wanted to know, enough to make us very sure we don’t want to see her in office here in the lower 48 at least. At least most of us don’t. Yet, there is a clanging minority that continue to sing her praises. I thought about that, and what it means. Can that many people with straight face enunciate the big lie? Or is it possible that that many people can genuinely be so brain dead?

While we smile and think about a new way of doing business in Washington, and are anxious to offer ourselves to the sacrifices we know deep in our heart will be required to “get back on track,” plenty of normal appearing people are sadly moaning and going around in sackcloth and ashes, tolling the bell of Armageddon now that “That ONE” is at the helm. And Sarah figures quite prominently in their plans.

I wonder if Sarah knows the truth. That is a question that one could discuss for hours and never really reach a conclusion. After all, we have seen plenty of seemingly adequate human beings act everything but normal in their support of her. Again, one cannot know if they are seriously deluded or lying through their agenda soaked teeth. And so, it’s rather impossible to discern whether our Sarah knows the truth of her meteoric rise and the support she has among a segment of the American folk.

We don’t in truth know where the controllers of John McCain first came up with the notion that Sarah was just the “ticket” to send them to Washington and eternal fame. But we do know that the likes of Bill Kristol and Fred Barnes, those neo-con leaders of the Weekly Standard, first met her on a cruise up Alaska way. They were mighty impressed they claim. What they were impressed about is not quite clear.

We have learned that neo-cons, not being a normal subset of the American political scene (there being no obvious constituency), look for a host that they can use to do their bidding. George Bush, as we know, was their choice, the know-nothing, pretty much flop of a businessman turned Governor of Texas. (See daddy, I am somebody!) They were pretty darn correct that they could control his presidency, infiltrate his cabinet, and run the show as they chose. That is was a colossal flop, they conveniently ignore.

Sarah appears to be just the sort that would tickle their fancy. Bright, but not interested generally in politics, she was easy to butter up and make theirs. Apparently they convinced the brainless campaign leaders of John McCain, and, as they say, game on!

Billy K and his ilk of course are not the least excited about Sarah’s neo-con credentials. She has none, nor, likely could she even define a neo-con if asked. It is not her expertise that delights them, to the contrary it is her very lack of same that makes then squirm in orgasmic delight. She is controllable, easy to seduce, indoctrinate, and lead around by the nose. She will be ever so grateful, just as George Boy was. She will do their bidding, filling her cabinet with nice little fellow travelers as directed by her wise mentors.

Now the other group that delights in our Sarah is the right wing religious nuttery group. They have gained power through convincing the trailer/Nascar/redneck/uneducated that the there is only one issue before the world. The state of the world is a mess because we aren’t a fully operating Christian Nation. We are too secular, we are evil, abortion wracked, homo loving, adulterous, socialist, anti-God, atheists who are taking the world down the crapper fast.

Now whether any of these boobs actually believe any of this is a good question in and of itself, and one we are not addressing today. Given that we all too often find these religious leaders caught in compromising “sinful” acts, one might conclude that it is mostly a shtick that pays the bills. No doubt some are thoroughly convinced that God wrought 9/11, Katrina, and yes Obama himself, as punishment for his evil children. Only when we institute a theocracy and live according to their interpretation of the bible will all be well.

Now they think Sarah is their girl because they think she is a kindred spirit. Is she? Who knows. She talks the talk. She has herself prayed over by witch-eradicating pastors, and mouths all the proper anti-abortion, anti-gay, rhetoric. She suitably checks out “how to get offensive books removed from libraries.” Does she believe it or merely use it as useful in her campaign to further her political aims? Again, I haven’t a clue.

But the point is, that the utra-right religious wingnuts think she is usable in their quest of theocratic rule. They personally don’t much give a tinkers damn what other policies she pursues as long as they are properly “Republican” in nature. “Damn the torpedoes, free market economy ahead.” Don’t give a penny to those lazy so and so’s who subsist on food stamps and public housing and the ER. They are just not like us, us being the hard working Americans who would dig ditches rather than receive assistance. Yeah sure, until you are there buddy, and get hungry. Then let’s talk about how proud you really are.

Again, does Sarah know the truth? What does she know and when did she learn it? I don’t know. I doubt anybody but Todd does. But I rather doubt she is totally oblivious to it all. I suspect she has an inkling. And you might say, well, phew…not to worry. Plenty of folks have used the users to their own devices, and once in power, turned the tables and run the show as they always meant to. Is that our Sarah?

Could be. But that doesn’t leave us any solace I’m afraid. Because lurking deep in the moose girl’s amphibian brain is an insidious truth that should strike fear in us all. Sarah dear reader, is about ambition. She has taken the art of lust for personal power, to an all time high in chutzpah. She has that naked ambition that is seldom seen at such a high level. And that has some consequences that should make us all shudder, and conversely make those who would use her, happy indeed.

Sarah, the girl, just like us, is not at all like us. She has a burning desire to have power, and her easy rise in Alaskan politics has but fueled that fire. She dreams of great things now, that have her ensconced in the White House someday. She is a believer that she can do this. No matter that her rise occurred in the strange world that is Alaska.

She ran in Alaska to secure her lust for greed. She ran to pull from the American oil cartel, more of the pie. She wanted to line her own pockets, and well, she did that by lining the pockets of the rest of Alaskans. Such a constituency does not exist across the board in the lower 48. She is the socialist here, not Barack. She paid lip service to regular politics, learned next to nothing and found that it didn’t matter as long as that check to each and every Alaskan grew bigger.

She is about as incurious about politics in general as one can be and still be a politician. She doesn’t care about the world, or the US in that sense. Economics and foreign policy are of no interest to her. Being powerful and the center of attention is. She upsets no apple carts of conventionality. She famously told her staff that she need not prepare for the Couric interview because no woman would give her a hard time. You know, the discussion on her becoming the next Vice President, would focus naturally on motherhood, juggling work and babies, being a woman candidate in a sea of men. Katie would never dream of asking her actual questions about policy!

She has not learned that lying has consequences yet. She lies with impunity, about herself and her accomplishments, about her opponents, and about her abilities. She lies with impunity to escape being discovered for being the lightweight she is. She is simply a liar. Perhaps one day, she may find that it costs you something to get caught. So far that hasn’t happened.

So, should our Sarah return to run for the Presidency, she will not be the least adverse to doing the will of her supporters. After all, that is the essence of a symbiotic relationship. Each side gains from the exchange. She gets her power and she can parade around being the first Madam President, and in return the Bill Kristols, Rush Limbaughs, and Pat Robinson’s get theirs. She will happily do their bidding, because in the end, these issues don’t mean a thing to her either way.

And we of course will get ours, up the arse as they say.

Still, I welcome Sarah’s return to the campaign trail. I still have faith, and I have even more faith that four years of sanity will convince even more people that Sarah’s lack of vision is not in their best interest. Of all the possibilities out there, she would be the gift that keeps on giving. And I can’t wait. The times, they are a changin’.

Godly Humor Part IX

Anglicanism, Autobiography, Catholicism, God, religion

My time on Catholic Answers Forum became sporadic as time went on. It was just too soul killing to do day in and day out. One began to doubt one’s own sanity at times. One was forced to revisit research again and again to make sure that one’s assumptions were still correct, even though plenty of crazed ultra orthodox were there to question your sources. It was “I’ll see your source and raise you a more ancient one. Yours is not infallible, mine is.”

Of course, none of these folks were theologians or biblical experts. In fact, the few who claimed real scholarly expertise were usually arguing against them. In any event, one grew weary at times and needed a break. The Contrarian usually made it clear when it was time for me to get away, as I complained and snarled at all the various “idiotic” conclusions I was arguing against daily.

Still, I was being pulled in the direction of Church again. That did not waver, but grew stronger with each passing week. I contemplated going to a Church in Cedar Rapids and being an “anonymous” backbencher. I would attend, I would do “my thing” and I would leave, no one the wiser that I was no longer in the eyes of the Church welcome at the table. Yet, this too gnawed at me. It seemed unfair, and not enough.

One might ask why I was intent on returning to active worship in a church setting. Ritual was a serious draw for me. Of course the liturgy itself was essential, but I could get that by reading the Mass each day and I often did so. Ritual was missing, and this for me, was something I acknowledged as highly valuable. Others might see it as but a superficial exercise, but for me, the building and the interior were deeply moving, making God feel close.

Again, I do not argue that this is not in some sense anything but childish wonderment. I do not argue that the location and physical appearance of the building is important, the message is. Yet, for me, it drew me into that place of high holy mystery that made me feel in God’s presence, this, much as a walk in the woods was capable of engendering in me. So, attendance was required. I actually planned on attending St. Joseph in Cedar Rapids, but the floods soon took care of that issue for a few months at least.

And then, came the final weight that tipped the balance and everything changed. I do not wish to make anyone feel responsible, but in fact a couple were. Since I am amazingly happy today, their responsibility is a good thing. So I shall relate it to you.

One of my oldest blogging buddies is Jeannelle from Midlife at Farmlight. She is a fellow Iowan and I have always enjoyed her lovely descriptions about life on a dairy farm. She talks about many other things, and one of them is her Lutheran faith. She often showed pictures of the stained glass windows in her church. From her, I wandered down her blogroll one day, and found Ruth from Ruth’s Visions and Revisions.

Ruth is where I began to discover that there were truly faithful people who lived their faith as Jeannelle did, but blogged on it often. And more importantly she was progressive in her thinking about social issues. Finally, I seemed to find what I had long sought, folks who thought a bit like me! From Ruth, the list expanded by leaps and bounds and I found Fran From Fran I Am, and on and on. All faithful, loving caring people. I won’t list all the fine people I have come to meet. Some are clergy, others lay, but all are deeply involved in social issues and see things from a liberal/progressive place. All love and tolerate, all are compassionate and inclusive.

Through them, I began to think more seriously about my situation. I began to resent the fact that I would be forced to remain in the background lest a pesky nosy parishioner or a right wing priest ask the wrong questions and cause me to be rejected from table hospitality. I began to feel the sorrow that I was not well placed within the Roman Catholic framework.

It all came to a heard as Ruth and I exchanged e-mails and I learned that she had been a Roman Catholic before switching to the Episcopalian or Anglican Church. I won’t bore you with the details, but suffice it to say, she faced anonymously as it were, but faced none the less, the deacon and then priest who made it most clear that those not in full agreement with the Magisterium, were not welcome for the Eucharist.

Now, I knew this in theory, but now I actually saw that it had happened to someone. I recall a chill went down my spine and I began to seriously think about checking out an Episcopal church. Ruth was most helpful in this, checking out websites and giving me some idea of what to expect. I made the decision to push on. My first desire was to go to Independence. I loved this small town atmosphere, so pretty and delightful. But I soon found that the Church there was small, not even able to obtain a priest, but relying on a deacon.

This was fine in theory, but I figured that someone new to this faith as I would be, might be better served in a larger, more “ordinary” parish. I was still finding most of this a mystery of sorts. Ruth told me that the liturgy was much the same as I was used to, but of course, I had no way of understanding that sans experience. I was astounded that things like genuflecting and kneelers were in use. I thought those things thoroughly Roman. In fact, I recall years before being a bit incensed that some Protestant denominations “used” Catholic rituals at all. Most unseemly I thought. Those were Catholic, not for use by “common” Protestants.

Yes, Virginia, there was a time in my initial Catholicism when I was very arrogant too. My rituals were Catholic, not to be used in other churches for heaven sakes. I saw this first at Marygrove where my classes were filled with Catholics and Protestants of all kinds. We worshiped together, but I was acutely aware that they were being “allowed” (all in my mind of course) to partake of Catholic things. Such did not occur for the most part in their churches. I had only known generally that certain Protestant denominations were “high.” I had been taught that they “emulated” certain Catholic practices. That is how I saw it. I am ashamed to say this now, but then it was true.

In any case, most of you know the remainder of the story. I went my first time to Christ Church with the intention of going to Grace the following week. But I was so taken with Christ Church, that I knew I had found a home. I am sure, or reasonably sure, that I might feel as welcome at Grace, but I have never had the urge to find out. No doubt I will have the opportunity some day, since the classes I am hoping to enter soon are held at Grace part of the year.

I am now more interested in social issues and interfaith programs designed to work on common issues without regard to dogma. The jail ministry I am entering is like that, the board consisting of Catholics and Evangelicals and Methodists, as well as Episcopalians. I’m sure there are others as well. I have as I have stated before here, determined that trying to resolve doctrinal issues is mostly a waste of time. Our time is better spent in doing what we can to alleviate suffering in the world rather than arguing about faith vs. works and other such stuff.

I am happy indeed now. Oddly Christ Church is not an “old” church in design or decoration. It is fairly modern. I generally tend to adore the stone facades and old wooden floor churches with side altars and all that. The stained glass, of which I am hugely fond, is not much to speak of at Christ Church. I suspect Grace has better stained glass and it is stone as well. But in the end, what goes on inside is vastly more important and I have found the warm hand of God on my shoulder as I bow my head and kneel in the pew. I have found my home. I have found people I have learned in a short while to care deeply about.

I am profoundly grateful to Ruth and Jeannelle for their unknowing help in this matter of the Spirit. I know that I am touched by grace in meeting them and have been quietly, unknowingly led by their example. As I said, there are others in the blogging community who have had their part to play, both positively and negatively in this journey. I thank them all, for I am wise enough to know that rejection is guidance from God as well as direct leading. All, whether wishing me well or ill, have contributed to where I am today, happy, blessed, and yearning more than ever to serve well. So far, God has kept the Cross light for me, knowing that I am fragile and still deeply ego driven. But I feel the weight increasing incrementally. I hope that I shall be up for the task. With God’s grace, and the prayers of many, I know I will be.

This ends the my spiritual autobiography.
