Okay, so I’m a good deal more calm today. I watched MSNBC and Rachel Maddow last night. I have control again. I do not think that all is lost. I actually think Obama knows what he is doing and I think his team does as well.
But really, honestly, this is just getting embarrassing. I saw polls last night and again this morning that well, even caused the Contrarian, tongue in cheek of course, to say, “Maybe we should rethink that thing about giving women the vote.” I just shook my head and awkwardly mumbled, “I am feeling like a fool. What are white women thinking?”
So, I’ll ask, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU THINKING OUT THERE? Perhaps you don’t know what I am referring to. It seems that there has been a big swing in recent days on where white women are placing their allegiance. It has gone from 50% to maybe 30 something Obama/McCain, to 54% 42% McCain/Obama. Much like yesterday, my head is swirling and I’m just NOT getting this at all.
Women have traditionally been the bastion of reason and common sense when it came to such things as caring for family. They understood economics just fine when it came to putting food on the table. They understood about the needs of health care, for elderly parents whom they tended and kids, and shockingly, even for themselves as primary care giver to the family.
They understood about the rising costs of just about everything. They understood because on them fell the task of buying back to school clothes and supplies. Everybody relates to the woman clutching a fistful of coupons in the store, squeezing every last penny from the budget, and all so she can give her family every bit of enjoyment out of every dollar.
So what is up? Economics haven’t changed. The Republican party is still the ones who tanked the American economy, and have paid off the rich while the middle and working class family has suffered. Gas is still astronomical. Yet Sarah seems to have swept women off their feet. Why exactly is that?
Does she represent you? Does her history, which is long past now, cause you to think that she will deny her STATED positions on a plethora of issues that suggest she doesn’t relate to you at all, but rather to the class of people she longs to associate with instead?
I mean, this is not the Phyllis Schlafly type envisioned by the Republicans themselves. A woman with five children, one off to war, one pregnant and facing a child wedding, and another newborn with Down’s? Phyllis can’t be pleased privately at least. This is not the “family values” way of life of the Republican mouth. This is abandoning family for personal power period.
Now don’t get me wrong. I make no such judgment myself. If Ms. Palin and her family think they have worked out an arrangement that they feel works for them, far be it from me to throw in my two cents. I agree that few would question any man in a similar situation. That may not be right, and certainly some did question for instance John Edwards decision to continue with his campaign when Elizabeth learned her cancer was back. But on the whole, most did not question Edwards or other men similarly situated, and I’m sure not going to question Sarah.
I merely point it out, because it would seem that to those for whom those matters do ring untrue to their perceived “right behavior” Sarah should not be their candidate. The ultra right wing evangelical woman who truly believes her husband is her “head” and she is the family caregiver, should not be enthralled with Ms. Palin, rather they should be shocked and deeply against her candidacy.
So where are these women coming from? Are there ex-Obama women who overlooked his stance on a woman’s right to choose because of economic realities? If so, what has changed? Palin, like McCain is firmly in the category of taking that right from women. Palin, arguably is even more harsh than McCain in this area. Albeit she granted her daughter the right to choose, she would take that right from all women, even for cases of rape and incest. I mean that is exceedingly harsh wouldn’t you say? And if you child is gay, she is certainly not your friend. Her freaking church thinks that gayness is something you can “pray away.”
If you are tired of big oil and other big conglomerates running this country what has changed? Say what you will, Palin is a big business kind of woman. She may have taxed the oil companies in Alaska, but that is because that is real money in her pocket. That is like gold when you are talking about satisfying one’s base for heaven sake.
On the other hand, she has no interest in protecting the environment. She doesn’t even believe in man-made global warming. Does this sound like a woman who cares about the lives of your kids and their kids? Similarly, she believes in creationism and innocently suggests that “all things should be taught.” Sure, they should, but just not as science, duh. Is this helping your child to be better prepared for a global work place? I don’t think so.
So tell me how she is just like you? Do you go moose hunting? I certainly don’t. Explain to me exactly what she brings to the table that makes you feel comfortable all of the sudden. Because something else is creeping into my brain, and boy, it is making me highly uncomfortable.
She has a vagina. And so do you. Is that the reason? Please tell me it isn’t. Please tell me you not prepared to abandon common sense and reason just because she has a vagina. Give up on your kids, your middle class life style, on poverty, health care, education, the environment, and REAL change in government, just because Sarah doesn’t have a penis?
If this is true, then I truly am embarrassed. You have made me, a woman feel complicit and ashamed of my sex. Can we be bought off that easily? Are we so vacuous as that? If so, then we don’t deserve to vote. This is not to say that a huge percentage of men don’t deserve it either, but that is not what we are talking about is it?
I’m still waiting for somebody to tell me why someone would claim to have been backing Obama and then changed their mind for this rather vicious, not very knowledgeable woman. She spouted off yesterday about the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac bailout. As a couple of journalists suggested, it might indeed be better for her to avoid talking until she has a clue what she is talking about. So come on all your white women who back Sarah, tell me exactly in direct WORDS why? If you can’t then shaddup, don’t vote, and stop embarrassing yourself and me along with you.
