Short Takes on the Day 11/12/08

Update: My back is proceeding quite well. I’m hopeful that I will be back to normal within a week or so. I am back to doing housework, cooking and such, although I have to shorten my time certainly. My back begins to tighten after a bit and I have to rest more often. Still, it is wonderful to not feel like a slug. God is good!

I’m off to a meeting with our parish priest today. I figured that some spiritual direction was in order so that I can sort out the competing issues that I feel are present. My desire to do more volunteer or church related activities conflicts with both limitations in funds and time spend from home. I’m hoping Barbara can help me sort out these things and I can come to the best resolution. I’m always inclined to be a bit too self-absorbed in my spiritual life. I am drawn more deeply to study than I am to rolling up my sleeves.

I’m throwing in a bit of shopping as well, since I need a few more clothes that I can wear to church. So the Contrarian is on his own for dinner. My appointment is at 4 and I’m leaving around noon, so I can have a couple of hours to shop.

One last update: To those 3 other people on the planet who still use dial-up like I do, get Foxfire and a google reader if you haven’t done so. The speed is just simply much better. I don’t have to manually update, I can erase all the feeds at any time, the pictures load in the feed reader much faster, and well, I’m at least apply to view more blogs per day. Also, you can erase all but save starred ones which is particularly nice when I am low on time. I can take a quick look, mark a star on those I want to save for comment the next day, and move on. So far the google reader has worked flawlessly, although I see from the help section that it is not trouble free. I keep my fingers and toes crossed at all times. LOL.

You have to admit, Sarah Palin is doing her darned best to remake herself. Except, that as you listen, she really tells you nothing. She just alleges that they (her detractors) are lying, without proof that they are. Her claim that she never tried to get the Harry Potter books banned is symptomatic. She could have just said that she did not. Instead she claims that the books had not even been written when she was mayor of Wasilla. That is simply not true. The lady seems to believe that you can emit any lie, or she is simply so patently lazy that she can’t be bothered to look up the facts. Read Maureen Dowd’s take on Palin’s latest efforts.

By the way, in regards to Caribou Barbie, let me say this: She has set a standard for me. Any politician, pundit or political speaker who even begins to suggest that Sarah Palin was either unfairly maligned or that she was qualified for VP, has lost my ear. I know you are lying, and I simply don’t have time to listen to ya. Start by saying that Palin was NOT qualified. You may say that she might be in the future. If you do so, I’ll gladly give some credence to the fact that you have normal intelligence, whether I ultimately agree with you or not.

We haven’t featured Susan Posner here in a while and she is still doing a weekly column called the fundamentalist for American Prospect. She assesses the wacko right’s plans for take over of the Rethugs this week. You should read it, because I said you should, or it’s cod liver oil for you! Just kidding. Unbelievably, they argue that the Rethugs aren’t “conservative” enough and that Christianity is now in dire straits and will be persecuted soon. Yes, I did note that Obama certainly resembles Nero a lot. The wingnuts are wigging out in their wingnuttery these days. Also lots of good analysis of the values voter issues this time.

Humor? We got it right here. You thought you knew what Sarah was up to up there in cold Alaska. Well think again. She’s plotting and scheming and making money galore. That underwear actually brought a pretty piece of silver! I want me one of them Toddballs!

One thing all those who know McCain know, is that he hates you one minute and then is your bosom buddy the next. Principle seems to escape him. We witnessed this in his hiring of those slimeballs who had trashed him in 2000 to be the ones to run his slime campaign against Obama. Well he seems to be at it again. Saxby Chambliss is locked in a run-off in Georgia. McCain is said to be ready to help out in the campaign. This after he said this about Chambliss’s campaign tactics used against Max Cleland in 2002:

McCAIN: I’d never seen anything like that ad. Putting pictures of Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden next to the picture of a man who left three limbs on the battlefield — it’s worse than disgraceful. It’s reprehensible.

This is exactly why I will never forgive McCain. He can’t just go back to being one of the boys again. He showed me something about himself that forever will color my view. He is not a good man, he is unprincipled. And read the comments after the link, they are good ones.

Religious Dispatches looks at the broad issue of evolution, choice, and abortion in a thoughtful post called Double Helix: Pro-Choice, Pro-Human, Pro-God. We need to discuss this issue and stop this insane idea that it’s one or the other. We need to find common ground and I am convinced that it indeed exists.

I generally get angry when politicians attempt to score by lambasting scientific study as “silly” and a waste of money. McCain did it several times, the most notably about studying bears in Montana or somewhere. Old John forgot of course, that he voted for the dang bill, duh. But this one, this study here, I can definitely say is worthless. It says that walking helps curb the desire for chocolate! Now who in the freakin’ world would want to do that?

  1. John McCain was joker before all this crap, now he’s just a two-bit, sellout hack, a waste of flesh and blood.

  2. Sherry, I’m glad you’re feeling better. I didn’t know had dial-up, since you get all these feeds, etc. You’re great at sharing your knowledge with links. Thanks.

  3. glad you are feeling better…a bad back can upset everything in life…

  4. Glad your back is better. I hope the meeting with Barbara went well.

  5. Randal, I agree totally. He was always a terrible person who covered it up nicely for many years. He sucks.

  6. Jan, I’m hopeful to get satellite in a few months if all goes well with finances. We figure we can break even with our phone, internet costs against the satellite monthly fee. It’s the darned start up cost of like $500 that we are still waiting on. Hopefully it’s come down somewhat but I doubt it.

  7. Mom, it’s very much better, but I suspect the final push will take a lot longer. I think I really strained some big muscles. At least I can do stuff now, even though i have to take a lot of breaks and let it rest. It’s better than being laid up that’s for sure.

  8. Indeed Ruth, it went well, I’m checking out a few things we discussed, and will become a eucharistic minister next spring I believe. It was productive and made me feel good.

  9. Your analysis has a MAJOR flaw in it. According to the urban legend that was circulating, the date of when this so called proposed book banning of that list of books was supposed to have happened, was placed in the year of 1996. Your post leaves out that particular piece of info.

Yes, you are correct that Palin is mistaken in stating something like: “it hadn’t even been written when I was the mayor”. Apparently, she misunderstood the exact minute specifics about the rumor (“Palin tried to ban books, including Harry Potter book in 1996″) that was being told about her as well as the defense (“Harry Potter wasn’t published yet in 1996″)that was also circulating in response to that rumor. Obviously Palin misheard something along the way about this rumor which caused her to make the mistake of saying tjhat Harry Potter wasnt published yet during her term as Mayor, when she should have said they werent published in 1996, (where the phony rumor puts the date of the attempted book banning) during her first year in office.

  10. Thanks for the update and the chilaquiles recipe, which is actually more of an authentic Mexican recipe. I have heard that it is used as a great morning after breakfast when you have a hangover, but I haven’t tried that yet.

  11. CRD, actually the banning attempts I heard of had to do with same sex books for kids like “I have two mommies.” I won’t quibble with you about the technicalities here, since that is not the point. The point is, our intrepid moose hunter is too lazy to check out facts. She has found that she can run and win office in Alaska without knowing anything, and thinks she can translate this to national office. She is mistaken.

  12. Mexican food lover: I think you may be correct, but I put all mexican recipes under Tex Mex because we in the US tend to think that everything is Mexican when most of it is adaptation from Mexican foods. Thanks for adding that, yes this is often used as a breakfast food. I’m going to try it soon, but today is nachos for us! LOL
